Group Sculpture Course

Explore Modern Sculpture in the studio through the creation of a personal totem.

Overview:

Group Sculpture CourseThis studio course is an introduction to the tools, materials, and methods of modern sculpture. Discussion of studio theory will present issues from realism to abstraction. Hands-on assignments will compliment the discussions with work in papier-mâché, plaster carving, found objects, and soft material carving. Techniques introduced will cover the sculptural processes of carving, modeling, and construction.

The emphasis in this course is on recognizing and developing your talents in various techniques in particular and 3-D organization in general. Along with manual skills such as drawing and modeling, the course involves history, critical thinking, and theoretical analysis of art. No prior study or experience in art is necessary.

Projects

  1. Principles of additive 3-D organization studied with papier-mâché, plaster casting, and found objects integration
  2. Principles of subtractive 3-D organization studied with cellular concrete carving and found objects integration

The projects are not meant to develop a particular technique or style, but to help the student recognize the breadth of materials, techniques, and ideas used in sculpture today. The final result of the course is the creation of multiple personal totems - representations of an individual's history, beliefs or experiences.

Each project will typically have 3 or 4 steps and take several weeks to complete.

It is advised that you attend each course. However, if you know you'll be absent, please contact us in advance.
